01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At Sunigiri, whose name incorporates the character for vinegar, the centerpiece is seasoned sushi rice made with rich red vinegar. Delivering a clean, well-rounded acidity rather than a harsh sour note, the rice pairs naturally with lightly sweetened simmered conger eel, cured mackerel sushi, and colorful barachirashi. Alongside traditional nigiri, everyday selections such as fermented soybean natto rolls and smoked mackerel rolls give visitors plenty of leeway to match their mood.

When picking up a box from the chilled display case, enjoying it straight away is not quite the best approach. Leaving the pack at room temperature for about 15 minutes allows the chill to dissipate, softening the red vinegar grains so they loosen naturally and mesh better with each topping.

The accompanying prepared dishes also showcase the fishmonger craftsmanship behind the counter. Savory fried tuna cheek and tender, dashi-rich rolled omelet provide affordable choices to round out dinner or accompany an evening drink. For dessert, a quirky tempura ice cream offers a playful extra for the walk.

Located along the street in Nezu 1-chome, the shop runs from midday into the early evening, accepting major credit cards and transit IC cards. It remains an approachable neighborhood stop, whether you are picking up lunch during a quiet walk through old Tokyo or taking home a savory side dish at the end of the day.
